We have carried out an extensive refurbishment programme of our existing buildings.
Our main focus was to make the building more ecologically sound, improving the local environment not only for you and our staff but those living nearby.
It’s important to us that we’re not only here to treat you when you’re ill but that we help to prevent you from becoming ill in the first place.
Reducing carbon emissions has significant health benefits, as poor environmental health contributes to a number of major conditions, including asthma, cancer and heart health.
Heart of our plans
The work was carried out as part of a wider scheme to implement energy efficiency measures across our site, funded by the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme.
Before the completion of these works, Goole was one of only two remaining coal powered hospitals in the country.
We invested £2.75 million in removing the coal fired boilers and are now in the process of replacing them with a more eco-friendly low-carbon gas CHP system.
When combined with other energy efficiency measures we’ve put in place – including improved insulation, windows, a new Building Management System and LED lighting – we cut our carbon emissions at Goole alone by 60%.
And that’s not all
Upgrading our clinical facilities was also an important aspect of the works.
This included the £330,000 refurbishment of X Ray room one, where we installed new digital X Ray equipment.
What’s happening now?
Our Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system is now up and running and generating our own electricity.
Rather than sending it back out to the grid, we’re using it to power the hospital, lowering our costs and our carbon footprint in one move.
We’ve also installed a new heat plate exchange system that gives us our hot water and updated our emergency lighting system.

There’s no impact on car parking or access to the hospital as a result of any works at this point.
