We have made significant improvements to Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby, creating a number of new, purpose-built facilities, alongside an extensive refurbishment programme in our existing buildings.
In January we welcomed our first patients to our new £4.4 million Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and Integrated Acute Assessment (IAA) units.
The latest phase in our £65.2 million investment in improving urgent and emergency care across northern Lincolnshire, this new facility will provide us with modern, well-equipped facilities that are purpose-built to meet the needs of our communities for years to come.
Located directly next to our existing Emergency Department, the units are designed to work in harmony with each other, helping to reduce demand and waiting times by making it easier for you to be seen by our expert clinicians.
Medicine Matron, Joanne Forward, said: “What these units will allow us to do is to direct you straight to the best clinician to meet your needs.
“They will be staffed with senior clinicians from a range of disciplines, so instead of going into the Emergency Department and waiting to be admitted to a ward in order to be seen by these clinicians, you can be referred straight to them by your GP, 111, the ambulance service or our community teams. This can also be applied to some patients who come to the Emergency Department and need to see a specialist clinician.
“This means we can start your treatment more quickly and we may not need to admit you into hospital at all – and, if you do need to come into hospital for inpatient care, it’s likely you will be able to go home more quickly.”
The opening of the new units followed on from our fantastic £17.9 million Grimsby Emergency Department which opened in October 2022, providing us with modern, well-equipped facilities, that are twice the size of our old department.
Features include:
- An increased waiting area to cope with demand and social distancing requirements
- A dedicated play area for our younger patients
- More cubicles, which have been designed to enable flexible use, which will help us manage surges in patient numbers and make it easier to meet individual patient needs.
- A dedicated ambulance bay, reducing the time to transfer patients arriving by ambulance into the hospital
Green future
As part of the project we’ve built a single-storey decked car park outside the main entrance, which opened in February 2022 and extended the public car park around the Family Services building.
Additional staff parking has also been created behind the restaurant and on the former IT building near the Second Avenue entrance to the site.
We have also invested a further £3.5 million in replacing our fire alarm system and making vital improvements to our water infrastructure.

Located opposite the main patient and visitor car park, it is close to both the patient drop off area and the bus stop, making it easier for you to get to where you need to be.
