What is an MRI scan?
An MRI is a scan that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce highly detailed images of the inside of the body. MRI stands for Magnetic resonance imaging. For this scan you will need to lie in a tube, which looks a bit like a packet of polo mints . You will be asked to lie on a flat bed that’s then moved into the scanner.
Depending on the part of your body being scanned, you’ll either be head first or feet first. You’ll need to keep as still as possible. The Radiographer can see and hear you throughout the examination.
You’ll be given earplugs or headphones to wear as the scanner does makes loud tapping noises, which is normal.
The scan lasts 15 to 90 minutes, depending on the size of the area being scanned and how many images are taken.
What do I need to do to prepare?
Most scans do not require you to follow any special diet instructions. However if we do need you to change your diet we will provide you with a diet information sheet with your appointment letter.
Please let us know if you feel anxious or claustrophobic about having the scan. We can give you advice to help you feel calm
How long does it take?
Please allow one hour for your scan.
Does it hurt?
No, the scan is painless and the MRI Radiographer will be able to see you at all times during the
scan. Music may be played to you via headphones during the procedure. If you so wish, you can bring a CD of your favourite music and we may be able to play it during the scan.

Where do I go for my scan?
At Scunthorpe we are based in the Blue Sky Imaging Suite on the C floor of the hospital.
At Grimsby we are opposite the Family Services building.
A mobile MRI unit visits Goole hospital.
How do I get the results?
After the MRI scan, the Consultant Radiologist will study your scan images and send a report to your doctor who referred you for the scan.
Our facilities
We’ve invested heavily in our diagnostic facilities and have brand new, state-of-the art scanners. Our £8million MRI Suite at Grimsby was opened by Strictly Come Dancing star Joanne Clifton and has doubled our capacity, helping patients to be seen and diagnosed more quickly. At Scunthorpe building work is underway on an additional MRI scanner.
